Is it a weight loss manual,
a reference book, a cookbook or an exercise-training guide?
The answer is clearly, all of the above. I have no idea
how long it took to compile this text, (chock full of valuable
information) but the reader certainly is the beneficiary
of Kostas’ efforts.
As nutritionists in private practice, it’s difficult
to find the time to develop original handouts tailored
towards each patient’s needs. This manual provides
page after page of solid suggestions and “how to” tips
for patients and their support systems. Topics such as
dining healthfully while travelling or learning to be “calorie
savvy” while eating in restaurants are a few of
the categories explored. Suggestions for low fat cooking
substitutes as well as recipe makeovers are simply described.
What I found to be most interesting about this book
is its diversity. Lighthearted subjects such as exercise
and shopping tips are nestled among more serious contents
like managing stress and discovering your inner psyche.
This text also includes many helpful charts and tables
as well as blank samples of records that can be filled
out by patients undergoing their weight loss process.
There is also diversity in the book’s practical
use: The counselor can use different subjects or worksheets
to review along with the patient and elaborate upon the
info during the counseling session or the patient could
purchase the manual and explore it on his/her own.
I highly recommend this reader-friendly practical guide
to eating and exercising more healthfully and more willingly.
Although weight reduction and maintenance are the main
messages conveyed, counselors or “coaches” could
use this wealth of information to aid those who wish to
protect their heart or preserve their state of health.
This book is so complete, there’s even a page entitled, “How
to use this book!” This sheet encourages readers
to comb the headings and find whatever sections are pertinent
to one’s primary “needs or challenges.” This
helps them to skip past subjects they’re familiar
with focus on their areas of need. The text also includes
an appendix entitled, “Tips for the Health Professional”,
highlighting the stages of change through which we can
guide our patients.
